Apply online today for 2008-09 parking permits or Commute Club memberships

It is time to renew or apply for your 2008-09 parking permit or enroll in the Commute Club for 2008-09. Commute Club members receive up to $282 in Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit in 2008-09. Current parking permits expire on Aug. 31, and there will be no formal grace period. Permit holders need to display their new parking stickers as of Sept. 1. To see 2008-09 permit rates, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/parking_info/ParkingInformation.shtml#prices.

Select one of the following ways to apply:

1. Online: http://transportation.stanford.edu/orders
2. Fax: 650.724.8676
3. Email (scanned application): transportation@stanford.edu
4. Mail or in person: 340 Bonair Siding (Mail Code 7255), Stanford, CA 94305-7255

The most convenient option is to request your parking permit online (http://transportation.stanford.edu/orders) by August 15, and request "mail delivery" to avoid a trip to the P&TS office and the long lines associated with the new academic year. If you select "will-call," permits will be available at the P&TS office 5 to 10 days after your application is received. You will be notified when your permit is available for pickup.

Over-the-counter sales are available from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parking & Transportation Services office hours will be extended to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, Wednesday, Aug. 27, and Thursday, Aug. 28. For more information, call 650.723.9362 or send email to transportation@stanford.edu. Application forms are available at http://transportation.stanford.edu/maps_forms_apps/MapsForms.shtml#forms-apps.

Before you purchase a permit, consider the alternatives, especially in light of high gas prices and increased parking permit costs. Join the Commute Club to receive up to $282 in Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit in 2008-09. For information about the Commute Club or to request help planning your alternative commute, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

The Parking Structure 6 (PS-6) Express Shuttle schedule starts August 15

To increase the convenience of Parking Structure 6 as an alternative to parking at Maples Lot, Serra Lot, and Track House Lot, which are impacted by construction-related parking displacements, a PS-6 Express Marguerite bus will begin on August 15, 2008, during peak-commute times. The new PS-6 Express bus route map and schedule is available, along with estimated walking times, at http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite.

With the new PS-6 Express bus and the existing Marguerite Line B routes, there will be Marguerite service between Parking Structure 6 and Galvez and Serra Streets every 7 minutes during peak-commute times. The PS-6 entrance ramp is located at 560 Wilbur Way, between Bowdoin Lane and Campus Drive East. PS-6 offers 1,180 parking spaces for commuter ("A" and "C" permits), resident ("EA" and "SO" permits), and visitor parking.

A $20 gift card could be yours if you answer this month's Factoid Quiz:

Here is this month's Factoid Quiz question: Does the recent "hands-free driving" law in California, which bans the use of cell phones while driving unless one uses a hands-free cell phone device, apply to bicyclists at Stanford? A) Yes, bicyclists can be cited for using a cell phone while riding if they do not use a hands-free cell phone device, B) No, the law only applies to vehicles, C) Yes, it applies in California but not when riding on Stanford property, D) No, because bicycles are not governed by vehicle laws and regulations. If you don’t know the answer, visit our website to find out. Submit your answer through our website quiz page, and you’ll be entered in our $20 monthly gift card drawing.

Congratulations to our July winner: John B. Gruver, Jr., a data analyst with IT Services, who won a $20 StanfordCardPlan, which is accepted at the Stanford Bookstore, Peet's, Jamba Juice, Stanford Dining, and other campus locations. He answered correctly that Clean Air Cash is paid to eligible Commute Club members on a quarterly basis.

Each month, our team at Parking & Transportation Services challenges you with a new quiz question about our office, programs, and services.* Send us your suggestions for our Factoid Quiz question, and if your question is selected, you will win a $20 gift card! Fill out the suggestion form on our website: http://transportation.stanford.edu/quiz/quizQuestion.html. If you have a question that needs an answer, ask us directly at commuteclub@stanford.edu.

* Members of the Stanford community may play once each month. Your name will be added to a drawing at the end of the month. You are eligible to win only one prize per academic year, but you are welcome to complete the quiz each month. At the end of the month, your name will be entered in a prize drawing. The winner, chosen at random, will receive a $20 gift card. If your quiz question is selected, you will receive a $20 gift card.

Do you know where to park and ride a scooter on campus?

If you are using a gas or electric scooter to commute to or travel around campus, note that scooters are considered a motorized vehicle. Follow these tips to avoid a citation:

* Scooters and mopeds must be parked in motorcycle parking spaces or "A" and "C" parking spaces with the corresponding parking permit.
* Scooters may not be parked in buildings, arcades, or bicycle areas, nor can they be locked to bicycle racks, poles, or other fixtures on campus.
* Scooters are banned from the Pedestrian Zone and any area accessed through bollards.

If you have questions or need more information, send an email to transportation@stanford.edu or call the P&TS office at 650.723.9362.
